Round up of 2017

Firstly a quick follow-up from my last blog ….

I continue to try and be more aware of my mood on a daily basis …work is keeping me busy so the majority of the time I’m keeping to busy to think. I continue to try and forward plan especially when it comes to cooking my meals and fitting in the odd household chore.

This in turn is helping with my weight loss and again that is a great mood boost. Loosing 10.5lb in 9wks 🙂 I’m happy with that. One of the items I hope to feature more in my blogs in the coming year will be my weight loss journey including my favourite recipes, weight updates and any hints or tips I find that work for me.

Spag bol & Curry mince

Well that last week of annual leave flew by an in fact I got very little of the things I wanted to do .. done :-/
but not going to stress over it .. life just sometimes gets in the way of things.

So a quick look over 2017 …. what have I achieved ….

I suppose the biggest achievement has been my registered nurse qualification quickly followed by a job that I really enjoy. At my age the last thing I want is a fantastic promotion chasing career, more of a job that I can grow into and just get better at. I love to share my knowledge and ideals of caring for people so look forward to working with others to do that.

Because of the two job moves there just didn’t seem to be the right time available to do the travelling I had hoped and I still have the chore of sorting out passports for both Hubbs and I which will enable to achieved that travel. So adding that to the top of my list of ”TO DO’s’ for the New Year. Instead we have managed to make a start on the new restyling of our home and garden which will be continued into next year.

Watch my garden grow 🙂

Travel …that will happen in 2018 …. any suggestions where to go ?? Never flown before and not good with too much sunshine and heat ?

Going to leave this Blog entry here and

See you soon xx

New week …. (part 1)

As I wrote in my last blog …. I’ve been struggling a bit with my ‘mood’ and feeling down enough to begin to worry. So after accepting that I’d failed the No alcohol challenge for the month of October .. I set myself another challenge and that was to set my mood around from going down to looking up and forward.

Knowing my moods and how to manage them I knew I would have to keep busy, setting myself a timetable for the week. In the beginning I did fill each hour with something to do or achieve, I’m an awful thinker and often with too much time on my hands that can get me into trouble in more ways than I care to comment. What follows is a brief outline of how I started my week.

Monday : Up, dressed and bed made by 9am (keeping a set routine and times helps me stay focussed)
10.00 Shopping and attempted to get flu jab (but wrong pharmacist in :-/)
11.30 Joined Slimming world for the 3rd and last time
13.30 Meet up with daughter drove her to an appointment and caught up with life on the way
16.00 Home and had planned to do some training stuff for work but sadly was not focussed enough for
that so late in the day but did do some recipe research and meal planning
Mood out of 10 = 8

turned out to be the wrong venue for SW

Tuesday : Work

Wednesday : Up early to see hubbs off to do his CBT (motorbike test thing) so was up dressed and bed made by 8am
8.00 Made a start on household chores sorting out washing and ironing.
9.00 Started cooking meals for the next few days. Made a butternut squash and sweet potato soup
this simmered away in the slow cooker nearly all day and then did Easy Tuna and pasta
which made 4 portions, 2 I put in the fridge and 2 in the freezer.
10.30 I made a start on cleaning up the kitchen, front room and washing down the garden.
12.30 Lunch and social media catch up
13.30 Upstairs clean up finished by 15.00 so chilled for an hour
16.00 Jumped in the shower and got ready to meet up with my 2 sisters and mum for a meal and
evening at the theatre
mood out of 10 = 9

Watched ”The Motown story”

Thursday : 8.00 Up and awake to enjoy breakfast with hubbs before he went off to work but felt quite
lethargic and unmotivated which then lead to just sitting around in my pj’s watching
nothing particular on TV and surfing the internet.
12.30 Lunch
13.30 Finally got showered and dress :-/ and probably would have done that if I hadn’t need to
go to the shops
14.00 Called in at work before doing a very quick shop.
Mood out of 10 = 5

Slightly spicy soup

Now already I can see I’m beginning to stray and that’s why I felt the need to blog …just to get my focus and motivation back so apologies for what probably reads as a very boring few days but that’s ME 🙂

True confessions ………

Ok Ok …..I confess I failed my personal challenge of no booze for October … the Stoptober challenge.

Its been at the back of my mind …niggling at me and slowly crawling to the front when all I’ve done is think about it … failing … and when I let it in all the other things I’ve failed at come flooding into my thoughts. At the risk then of disappearing into a slump of depression …I have got to fight it.

How ?? What can I do ??

Well for me … I keep busy, occupying my mind with good stuff so not to let my failings pull me down.

So this Saturday night with a glass of prosecco (sorry) I’m planning what to do this coming week. 3 days next week are easy as I’m working, doing 12hr shifts gives you little time to think of anything else during that day. The rest of the week I will plan a mix of chores, pleasurable projects and some meet ups with family, this will be done hour by hour fitting in meal times and setting alarms and bed times etc. If there’s one thing I have learnt when handling my depression its that I need routine.

I will include creative projects such as time outside in my garden or a sewing session, there’s nothing better at the end of the day and seeing something that you have achieved or produced. As well as those boring household chores to keep up to date with like washing ironing dusting vacuuming the list is endless when you think about it. We are in the middle of decorating both the kitchen and living room so I can do stuff towards completing that. Hoping to get it all done by Christmas 🙂

A couple of meet ups with family have already been arranged which is great as it also gives me something to look forward too. Very excited about Wednesday evening as I’m meeting up with my 2 sisters and mum for a meal and then going on to the theatre to watch ”The Motown story’. Yep this will include eating something not good but i’m hoping with wise choices and accounting for it the rest of the week that the damage will be minimal. Also got an afternoon planned with my daughter well actually I’m playing taxi but that’s fine I might get a coffee out of it too.

Something else I need to do is start feeling healthier and better about myself so I’m going to bite the bullet and for the 3rd time enrol with slimming world …. yes I know what I shouldn’t be eating and what I should, but there’s something about the weigh in that makes you stick to plan. Meal planning, preparation and shopping, will have to be taken into account too, cooking up some meals for work when on my days off.

So ok I may have failed Stoptober but sometimes you have to fail something …. to then get up from it. I may even come back better than I would have done.

Lastly to all those that pledged to give up something for Stoptober ..well done not long now xx

Feeling so much better in more ways than one …

Back at the beginning of January i had all these plans to change my diet, exercise more, generally get out of the rut i felt i was in but then just before christmas it appeared i’d trapped a nerve in my neck.  The pain at first was unbearable, it has made me so much more understanding of those who have this sort of pain long-term.  This is the 7th week now and with regular physio and medication things seem to start feeling a little better.

I’m now on day 3 of my diet, well i’m not following a diet as such just not eating what i know is bad.  After so many years of trying  different diets i’ve learnt what works and what doesn’t 🙂  On day 1 i weighed myself to give me a start weight and plan to weigh in on friday’s in the hope by loosing something it will keep me motivated through the weekend.

As well as watching what i’m eating i’ve dug out my wii fit and done 30 minutes exercise on there each day, not much i know but i’m trying to be more active generally,  been ages since i’ve had the motivation to give the house such a good clean 🙂 and i’m gagging to get out into the garden ( seperate blog for garden).  I try to walk most places i go such as hospital for physio and popping to town both are only 30min journeys.  As for dog walking the weather is still so wet i’ve only managed to get out with the ‘girls’ every few days and then when we get back they all need baths as they’ve not yet learnt to stay on the paths and out of the muddy puddles.

My mood has lifted too, i’m feeling a lot more positive about everything and looking forward to a great 2013 even if it started a little later than i’d planned.

Quick update…..

Sadly i’m still in a lot of pain with the trapped nerve in my neck/shoulder,  off  for some pyhsio this afternoon.

Because of the pain i’m struggling to get motivated with my plans to change my diet/exercise routines, actually i have very little motivation or inspiration to do anything much.

I’ve hardly picked up my camera this last month and only managed a few long dog walks :-/ although this last 2 weeks snow stopped us being able to get out.

buses kept on going

Before christmas my dear hubby had said yes to taking my eldest and step son to a concert in Birmingham which would involve waiting there while they had fun,  that happened this week.  So after watching the weather reports very closely we took the drive in our little car, thankfully snow stayed away for the whole evening.

We’ve never been to Birmingham and were really surprised how big everything was, the buildings were so very tall and best of all the shopping centre was huge.

After making sure the boys were at the right venue we took a little walk around, grabbed something to eat then went back to the car to wait ……. surprisingly they were all finished by 10.30pm and got back to the car buzzing and very happy.

I’m slowly collecting new seeds to go in our vegetable plot but as yet i’ve held off sowing anything.  Just collecting toilet roll tubes ready for sowing pea’s, bean’s, sweet corn and my favourite ( i know not vegetables either )  sweet pea’s.  Because of this very cold spell and the covering of snow i’ve not even gone into the garden much although i did take a few photos as the snow has made it all look quite pretty.

My ‘girls’ have all had a check up at the vets and are all healthy apart from Misha who is perhaps a little over wieght.  Watching them discover the snow in the back garden was like watching three puppies playing.

Hopefully in the very near future i’ll get into my new routines  and this will include some more regular blogging.

Take care peeps xx

Monday Morning Menu ..

It’s now been  2 1/2wks  since i completed my 31 day challenge during October, where i refrained from one of my vice’s the dreaded ‘booze’.  Since then i’ve over indulged in both drink and unhealthy eating 🙂

As i found that  blogging about  my challenge helped keep me motivated i thought i’d blog more often.

Mondays i hope to layout my plans for the week, my menu (as i continue my fight with loosing weight)  my plans to exercise ( to help improve my fitness) and anything else that i might have going on.

Tuna Pasta

Wednesdays i’ll do a wordless blog show casing my love for taking photos, they’ll include photos of all sorts as i’m in a group that gives us daily prompts over the month and anything else i might think of.

sun setting on our walk

Fridays blog i’d like to devote to my ‘girls’, my 3 cavalier king charles  spaniels and what adventures we get up to.

My ‘girls’ never far from my side

And so it begins …….

During October my blogs included all 3 meals i planned to have each day but because i tend to stick to very similar foods for breakfast and lunch i’ll only actually mention my main meals.

Monday :  Gammon, potatoes and mushy peas

Tuesday:  Chilli con carne + rice  (using slimming worlds recipe)

Wednesday :  Tuna Pasta with salad

Thursday :  Quiche, savoury rice and salad

Friday :  Sausage, egg and chips

Saturday :  Chilli con carne and baked potato

Sunday  :  Roast chicken dinner

Exercise Plan

( This has to be cheap and cheerful)

Monday :  Walk the dogs  ( our walk normally takes us 45 – 50mins, i intend to increase the speed i walk and the distance we cover over time)

Tuesday :   Super Clean  (house work i hate it so i intend to charge up my iPod and clean from top to bottom at high-speed, vacuuming, dusting, changing beds and anything else that needs doing)

Wednesday :  Walk the dogs

Thursday :  Walk the dogs

Friday :  Walk into town  (30mins there and back)  also as today is my weigh in day i’ll do half an hour on my wii fit

Saturday :  Walk the dogs

Sunday :  Day off  🙂

Hope you’ll stick with me and hope my blogging improves once i get stuck into it.

No booze challenge

31 day challenge … day 30

Found it difficult to stay focused today as i’m suffering with a ‘fuzzy’ sort of headache,  hoping it will pass and not turn into a cold or anything.

As it wasn’t raining and we have a few days rain forecast i decided to get out with the ‘girls’,  yuck it was really muddy but a refreshing walk, so glad i went.

Today’s menu

Brunch : Grilled Bacon and poached egg on toast (was yummy)

Tea :  Spicy bean curry/soup with rice

Snacks :  Rice cake & chewy bar

I was very good and said thank you but no thanks to the KFC tea my eldest son offered to buy, which the rest of the family really enjoyed.

Booze Craving 0/10  and looking forward to my hot chocolate 🙂

Becoming more and more obsessed with when not if  i’m going to have a drink next, had planned for a nice meal with a bottle of wine on day 31 but then that’s not  going without for the full month.  So will have a nice meal and some wine at some point 🙂 probably the weekend.
