Round up of 2017

Firstly a quick follow-up from my last blog ….

I continue to try and be more aware of my mood on a daily basis …work is keeping me busy so the majority of the time I’m keeping to busy to think. I continue to try and forward plan especially when it comes to cooking my meals and fitting in the odd household chore.

This in turn is helping with my weight loss and again that is a great mood boost. Loosing 10.5lb in 9wks 🙂 I’m happy with that. One of the items I hope to feature more in my blogs in the coming year will be my weight loss journey including my favourite recipes, weight updates and any hints or tips I find that work for me.

Spag bol & Curry mince

Well that last week of annual leave flew by an in fact I got very little of the things I wanted to do .. done :-/
but not going to stress over it .. life just sometimes gets in the way of things.

So a quick look over 2017 …. what have I achieved ….

I suppose the biggest achievement has been my registered nurse qualification quickly followed by a job that I really enjoy. At my age the last thing I want is a fantastic promotion chasing career, more of a job that I can grow into and just get better at. I love to share my knowledge and ideals of caring for people so look forward to working with others to do that.

Because of the two job moves there just didn’t seem to be the right time available to do the travelling I had hoped and I still have the chore of sorting out passports for both Hubbs and I which will enable to achieved that travel. So adding that to the top of my list of ”TO DO’s’ for the New Year. Instead we have managed to make a start on the new restyling of our home and garden which will be continued into next year.

Watch my garden grow 🙂

Travel …that will happen in 2018 …. any suggestions where to go ?? Never flown before and not good with too much sunshine and heat ?

Cheers

Going to leave this Blog entry here and

Slow and steady …………….

Well how’s everyone doing ??

Since I last blogged I’ve had 2 good weigh ins and lost a totally of 5 1/2lb I was so pleased but this was followed with a gain of 2lb :-(. I expected that result to set me back but as I’m still overflowing with determination and motivation I’ve stuck to the plan more than ever. I’m putting my gain down to working 5 12hr shifts in 6 days and I struggled to stay focused on food preparation and being tired willpower was at a low ebb and of course there was the day off in between which involved 2 takeaway’s :-/ Even though I chose wisely :-/ with the food items i obviously went overboard with the hot chocolate drink.

The gain has put me under pressure and reignited my determination, due to weighing in Wednesday instead of the Monday as usual this means i have less time to try and pull back the weight loss so i’ll just do my very best.

just 2 of my meals this week

As for my mood its been good obviously being preoccupied with work and loving it then the slimming world stuff on my days off I’ve had very little time to think too much. Today is the beginning of a weeks annual leave so i’m filling in my schedule so as to keep busy and productive which in turn stabilises my mood.

My TO DO list includes ….

Sewing – Blankets, doggie bandana’s, peg bags and a Christmas stocking or 2

Admin stuff – I have a huge pile of filing to do, I also want to organise some sort of payment log for my bills

Decorating – This will be mainly motivating hubbs to do some 🙂

Gardening – Need to clear my hanging baskets and a few tubs away, weather permitting I would like to jet wash the paths before winter really sets in as they can get really slippy in some places.

General House chores – Due to work I’ve got a bit behind and have a huge pile of ironing (which I hate to confess I actually enjoy doing)

Would also like to catch up with friends and family, sadly only managed to get one visit with my gorgeous Ruby Rose (granddaughter) during her visit home this week so will make sure I get more time with her when she visits next time. Will be spending time with my daughter helping rearrange her flat so when her little family returns they have a more space.

Oh and I will try and breath at some point lol

Returning to the world of work after a very long time as an at home mum, I have come to treasure my time off and like to make the most of any time I get in the most productive way I can.

So heres to a busy productive week off 🙂

New week …. (part 1)

As I wrote in my last blog …. I’ve been struggling a bit with my ‘mood’ and feeling down enough to begin to worry. So after accepting that I’d failed the No alcohol challenge for the month of October .. I set myself another challenge and that was to set my mood around from going down to looking up and forward.

Knowing my moods and how to manage them I knew I would have to keep busy, setting myself a timetable for the week. In the beginning I did fill each hour with something to do or achieve, I’m an awful thinker and often with too much time on my hands that can get me into trouble in more ways than I care to comment. What follows is a brief outline of how I started my week.

Monday : Up, dressed and bed made by 9am (keeping a set routine and times helps me stay focussed)
10.00 Shopping and attempted to get flu jab (but wrong pharmacist in :-/)
11.30 Joined Slimming world for the 3rd and last time
13.30 Meet up with daughter drove her to an appointment and caught up with life on the way
16.00 Home and had planned to do some training stuff for work but sadly was not focussed enough for
that so late in the day but did do some recipe research and meal planning
Mood out of 10 = 8

turned out to be the wrong venue for SW

Tuesday : Work

Wednesday : Up early to see hubbs off to do his CBT (motorbike test thing) so was up dressed and bed made by 8am
8.00 Made a start on household chores sorting out washing and ironing.
9.00 Started cooking meals for the next few days. Made a butternut squash and sweet potato soup
this simmered away in the slow cooker nearly all day and then did Easy Tuna and pasta
which made 4 portions, 2 I put in the fridge and 2 in the freezer.
10.30 I made a start on cleaning up the kitchen, front room and washing down the garden.
12.30 Lunch and social media catch up
13.30 Upstairs clean up finished by 15.00 so chilled for an hour
16.00 Jumped in the shower and got ready to meet up with my 2 sisters and mum for a meal and
evening at the theatre
mood out of 10 = 9

Watched ”The Motown story”

Thursday : 8.00 Up and awake to enjoy breakfast with hubbs before he went off to work but felt quite
lethargic and unmotivated which then lead to just sitting around in my pj’s watching
nothing particular on TV and surfing the internet.
12.30 Lunch
13.30 Finally got showered and dress :-/ and probably would have done that if I hadn’t need to
go to the shops
14.00 Called in at work before doing a very quick shop.
Mood out of 10 = 5

Slightly spicy soup

Now already I can see I’m beginning to stray and that’s why I felt the need to blog …just to get my focus and motivation back so apologies for what probably reads as a very boring few days but that’s ME 🙂

True confessions ………

Ok Ok …..I confess I failed my personal challenge of no booze for October … the Stoptober challenge.

Its been at the back of my mind …niggling at me and slowly crawling to the front when all I’ve done is think about it … failing … and when I let it in all the other things I’ve failed at come flooding into my thoughts. At the risk then of disappearing into a slump of depression …I have got to fight it.

How ?? What can I do ??

Well for me … I keep busy, occupying my mind with good stuff so not to let my failings pull me down.

So this Saturday night with a glass of prosecco (sorry) I’m planning what to do this coming week. 3 days next week are easy as I’m working, doing 12hr shifts gives you little time to think of anything else during that day. The rest of the week I will plan a mix of chores, pleasurable projects and some meet ups with family, this will be done hour by hour fitting in meal times and setting alarms and bed times etc. If there’s one thing I have learnt when handling my depression its that I need routine.

I will include creative projects such as time outside in my garden or a sewing session, there’s nothing better at the end of the day and seeing something that you have achieved or produced. As well as those boring household chores to keep up to date with like washing ironing dusting vacuuming the list is endless when you think about it. We are in the middle of decorating both the kitchen and living room so I can do stuff towards completing that. Hoping to get it all done by Christmas 🙂

A couple of meet ups with family have already been arranged which is great as it also gives me something to look forward too. Very excited about Wednesday evening as I’m meeting up with my 2 sisters and mum for a meal and then going on to the theatre to watch ”The Motown story’. Yep this will include eating something not good but i’m hoping with wise choices and accounting for it the rest of the week that the damage will be minimal. Also got an afternoon planned with my daughter well actually I’m playing taxi but that’s fine I might get a coffee out of it too.

Something else I need to do is start feeling healthier and better about myself so I’m going to bite the bullet and for the 3rd time enrol with slimming world …. yes I know what I shouldn’t be eating and what I should, but there’s something about the weigh in that makes you stick to plan. Meal planning, preparation and shopping, will have to be taken into account too, cooking up some meals for work when on my days off.

So ok I may have failed Stoptober but sometimes you have to fail something …. to then get up from it. I may even come back better than I would have done.

Lastly to all those that pledged to give up something for Stoptober ..well done not long now xx

Ruby Rose my gorgeous granddaughter and my 2nd granddaughter in the making due in Feb ’18 both reasons to stay sane xx

Happy new year to all my followers ….

Its been ages since i blogged here … but i hope to put that right. I’m not going to make resolutions to do certain things .. i hope to make new routines and achievable goals.

August 2013 after being on the waiting list for yrs we finally managed to get an allotment on a site just 2 minutes walk away from home. So this year we intend to keep just 2 raised beds in the garden vegetable plot and grow the majority of our vegetables down and the allotment. I hope to blog on our progress throughout the coming growing season.

I do hope to try to do the usual… get fit & loose weight but by concentrating on other things i hope they will just happen.

Later in the year i hope to go to university to study Back to Nursing course which will enable me to practise as a trained nurse again. Until then i intend on improving my maths currently enrolled in a course at college and attending all the study days possible that work arrange.

Also the usual subjects will probably come up are adventures of my dogs … any photo shoots i get inspired to do.

So again happy new year to you all … lets make 2014 a memorable one xx

7th week update of our allotment plot 1A

Haven’t we been lucky with the weather for the last 7weeks there have been very few days that its rained too much to keep us home.  So every spare minute we’ve had we run off to the allotment   🙂

Being the typical impatient women i am i was keen to get something in the ground other than a spade and took a risk.  I sowed some carrots, spring onions, peas, courgettes and turnips and look what i harvested yesterday.

017  no bad and there’s another courgette growing well.  Only a few of the spring onions germinated, slightly  more carrots, turnips are fighting for survival from slugs and i hope to harvest enough peas on sunday for lunch.

We’ve managed to get hold of a small shed and with some TLC it will shelter us from them surprise showers.

The plot has been split up into 5 edged beds although the 5th has the shed on half of it and we plan to do a small seating area on the other half.  We are slowly digging and finely weeding all the beds, i think we’re on about our 3rd time for 2 of the beds so weeds aren’t coming back quite so quickly,  now thinking about covering the soil with cardboard.

All the paths have been wood chipped to help reduce having to weed and cut the grass on them.  We’ve managed to get hold of 2 quite big draws which we plan to make into cold frames.  I think rather than put my strawberries into one of the beds i’ll do something with pallets (yet to decide on plan)

All in all its going well 🙂 roll on next season.

We’ll continue to grow vegetables in the garden but reduce the raised  beds back to just 2 it will be the smaller things like carrots, peas and spring onions and i hope to get more green house space for the seedlings 🙂

All is good 🙂

Yayyyy we got it :-)

About 5yrs ago i applied to the local council and a couple of the local parish councils for an allotment, in the mean time we’ve enjoyed growing a variety of vegetables in our garden.  Now proudly have 3 raised beds all fully packed with vegetables.

10days ago i got a call from the Allotments officer at the council asking if we’d like to take a look at a plot on a small site just 10mins walk from the house.  Well  the following day a meeting with the site manager was arranged and we got to see the plot.

First impressions were wow its huge and oh no what a lot of weeds.

plot 1a
plot 1a

006The plot already has 5 beds marked out with wooden edging.   Its right next to the tap, apart from  many weeds there are a few raspberry bushes and some potato plants.

There are approximately 10 plots on the site with 3 available.   Theres a communal shed we can use but the plot we chose has so much more room than we expected there would be room for our own shed and composting area.

That night my head was buzzing … omg we’re getting so late in the season …. what can we get planted asap…. i did eventually fall off to sleep in the early hours with the full version of how i’d like the plot to look in my mind.

The following day we went to pay the money and collect a key,  even though the weather was burning we did spend an hour having a go at clearing but the heat was too much so left to return home and cool down, but both being quiet impatient people we returned after tea when the temperature had dropped to clear even more.

By visit 3 we’d been able to dig and fine weed  one of the easier beds and even got to sow some carrots, spring onions and turnips.  On the 4th visit we planted some courgette seeds and some peas, not sure what we’ll get but felt the need to put something in the ground.

Think once the bazaar hot weather passes we’ll spend more time clearing the beds, each time one is completed we’ll cover with cardboard to be covered later with compost.

We also need to work on clearing and wood chipping the paths between the beds, arrange a seating area of course and the biggest thing planning what to put where next year.

We still plan to grow vegetables in the back garden but will be reducing back down to just 2 raised beds and also branch out a bit more in the flower area.

I’ve really enjoyed growing sun flowers, also just pulled some garlic i planted last october .. very pleased with that.  May have to invest in a green house which will be put in the garden to be home for so many more seedlings that i’ll need 🙂
